Rated Speed vs. Achievable Speed
A press's maximum rated strokes-per-minute figure assumes ideal conditions — simple part geometry, generous die clearance and no feed-related constraints. Real production speed is almost always lower, set by whichever element in the system is the actual bottleneck.
What Actually Limits Speed in Practice
- Feed line capability — a decoiler/straightener/feeder combination undersized for the press will cap speed regardless of press rating
- Die complexity — multi-station or fine-feature tooling often runs slower than a simple single-station die
- Material behavior — thicker or harder material typically requires a slower approach to protect shear-face quality
- Part handling downstream — if parts need manual separation or inspection, press speed beyond that point adds no throughput
When Higher Speed Is Worth Paying For
Higher stroke-rate capability earns its cost premium on long, stable production runs of relatively simple parts where feeding and downstream handling can actually keep pace — not on short runs or complex multi-feature parts where other factors are the real constraint.
