Fine Blanking vs. Conventional Stamping: Which Process Fits Your Part?

Edge Quality

Conventional stamping produces a shear zone followed by a fracture zone, leaving an angled, torn edge across roughly a third to half of material thickness. Fine blanking's three-force process keeps the material in compression through the full thickness, producing a smooth, near-vertical shear face across the entire cut.

Tolerance & Flatness

Fine blanked parts typically hold tighter flatness and dimensional tolerance than conventionally stamped parts of similar size, because the counter-pressure system controls part distortion during the cut.

Tooling & Press Cost

Fine blanking dies and presses cost more than conventional stamping equivalents, due to the added guiding precision and three-force hydraulic system required. This premium is typically justified when secondary machining or grinding would otherwise be required.
