Glossary of Fine Blanking Terms
Plain-language definitions of the technical terms used across our press specifications, tooling documentation and technology guides.
B
- Burr
- A small, typically thin protrusion of material left on the die-side edge of a fine blanked part after cutting.
- Blank Holder
- See Stripper — the plate that holds the material flat during and after the cutting stroke.
C
- Counter-Pressure (Ejector Force)
- A hydraulic force applied from beneath the part during the blanking stroke, supporting the material and helping produce a flat, distortion-free part.
- Cutting-Edge Clearance
- The gap between the punch and die cutting edges, set far tighter in fine blanking than in conventional stamping to maintain a compressive cutting condition.
- Closed Height (Shut Height)
- The distance from the bottom of the slide to the top of the bolster when the press is at the bottom of its stroke, with the stroke adjustment at its shortest setting.
D
- Deburring
- A secondary process — vibratory, brush or centrifugal — used to remove residual burr and meet a part's edge-condition specification.
- Die Height
- The distance between the die set's upper and lower mounting surfaces when closed; must fall within a press's die-height range.
- Decoiler
- The equipment that unwinds coiled sheet metal stock and feeds it toward the straightener and feeder.
F
- FAT (Factory Acceptance Test)
- A documented test of a press's function, load capacity and precision performed at the factory before shipment, often witnessed by the buyer.
- Fine Blanking
- A precision sheet-metal cutting process using three synchronized forces (V-ring, counter-pressure, blanking force) to produce a smooth, perpendicular shear face.
G
- Guiding System
- The columns, bushings and bearing surfaces that keep a press's ram/slide parallel to the bolster throughout the stroke — central to fine blanking precision.
S
- Servo-Hydraulic Drive
- A press drive configuration using a variable-speed servo motor to power the hydraulic pump, reducing energy use and allowing programmable velocity profiles.
- Shear Face
- The cut surface of a blanked part; in fine blanking this is smooth and nearly perpendicular across the full material thickness.
- Stripper
- The plate that holds material flat against the die during cutting and strips the finished part or scrap skeleton off the punch on the return stroke.
- Stroke Rate
- The number of press cycles (strokes) completed per minute, usually expressed in strokes per minute (spm).
T
- Three-Point Guiding
- A guiding system using three (or more) guiding columns arranged to resist tilting moments and keep the ram parallel to the bolster.
- Tonnage
- The rated force capacity of a press, typically expressed in tons or kilonewtons (kN).
V
- V-Ring (Impingement Ring)
- A raised, angled rib on the stripper or die plate that clamps material around the cut line before and during the blanking stroke, preventing lateral material flow and tearing.
