What Is Fine Blanking? Process Explained

Definition

Fine blanking (also called fineblanking or precision blanking) is a specialized sheet-metal cutting process that produces a smooth, perpendicular shear face across the full material thickness in a single press stroke — rather than the fractured, angled edge typical of conventional stamping.

The Three-Force Principle

Fine blanking presses apply three synchronized forces simultaneously: a V-ring (impingement ring) that clamps the material around the cut line to prevent tearing, a counter-pressure (ejector) force that supports the underside of the part, and the main blanking force that shears the profile. This combination keeps the material in compression during the cut, producing a clean shear face instead of a torn one.
