Single-Station vs. Multi-Station Fine Blanking: How to Decide

A practical framework for deciding whether your part needs simple single-station tooling or a multi-station transfer die.

Start With the Part, Not the Press

The decision is driven by how many distinct operations your finished part requires — blanking alone, or blanking plus forming, coining or additional piercing — not by press tonnage or throughput target alone.

When Single-Station Is the Right Call

  • The part is a flat blank with no forming or coining features
  • Piercing operations (if any) can be done in the same plane as the blank in one hit
  • Lower tooling budget or shorter expected production run

When Multi-Station Earns Its Cost

  • The part needs forming, coining or bending in addition to blanking
  • Multiple piercing operations at different depths would otherwise require secondary handling
  • High volume production where eliminating secondary operations meaningfully reduces per-part cost

A Practical Next Step

Send your part drawing — our applications engineer will identify which operations your part actually requires and recommend single- or multi-station tooling accordingly. See our multi-station press page for platform detail.
